The
first recording of the INB, who can
usually only be heard by surprise.
The ensemble specializes in crashing
events, whether it be international
economic summits or pretentious parties.
The
INB describe themselves as a "tactical
mobile rhythmic unit." More specifically,
the brigade is a marching percussion
ensemble, albeit with bullhorn vocals,
atavistic brass horns, flag and rifle
twirlers, medics, street performers,
and a noise generating shopping kart.
Tracks 1-8 and 13 were recorded live
in-studio at the Jack Straw Foundation
for a radio/web broadcast, and were
later mixed for this CD. Track 9 is
a collection of samples of street
performances, while Track 10 features
a remix interpretation of the INB
in action in Prague. Tracks 11-12
offer useful public service announcements.
Drawing on musical influences from
Japan to Brazil, and inheriting the
direct action politics of punk and
situationism, this album is rather
difficult to classify. Many of the
tracks represent unique cross-pollinations
of musical styles. The traditional
martial Mughal rhythms of NW India,
for instance, are combined with lyrics
sung in Druze to a middle eastern
melody, all stretched over an industrial
Western skeleton of urban unrest.
A street Samba track with guerrilla
lyrics sung in Portugese is followed
by Morroccan trance celebration song
learned from the Gnaoua.
With this album the INB has achieved
what many doubted they could ever
do; capture a reflection of their
intense live performance. Distilled
into this recording is the essence
of their furious energy, their unique
cross-cultural approach to music,
and the roar of the crowd as the drums
approach the front lines.
